How to find and identify your boiler filling loop

The filling loop is the part of the system that connects your heating circuit to the mains cold water, allowing you to top up the pressure. It is usually near the boiler underneath the casing or on the pipework just below.

There are two main types of filling loop you are likely to see in a home:

  • External braided hose: A flexible silver or grey metal hose with a valve (or two) at each end, joining two copper pipes.

  • Internal filling key or lever: Found on certain brands (for example Worcester), where you insert a plastic key or turn a built‑in lever beneath the boiler.

If you are unsure which you have, look carefully under the boiler for labels or diagrams on the casing, or check the manual. Never take any covers off the boiler itself, as only a Gas Safe engineer is allowed to remove the boiler case.

Safe step‑by‑step guide to repressurise a boiler

Before you start, make sure you can clearly see the pressure gauge on the boiler. If the gauge is damaged or unreadable, do not attempt to top up the pressure.

1. Turn the heating off and let the boiler cool

Switch the boiler off at the control panel and, if possible, turn the central heating off at the room thermostat too. This helps keep the pressure reading more accurate.

Let the system cool for at least 30 minutes so you are checking the cold pressure. Topping up when the boiler is hot can lead to over‑pressurising once everything cools down again.

2. Prepare the filling loop

For an external braided hose, check the hose is firmly connected at both ends and that the isolating valves are currently closed. The valve handles are usually at a right angle to the pipe when off.

For an internal key type, insert the key as shown in your manual, twist to lock it in place, and locate the associated filling knob or lever. Make sure you understand which way is open and closed before you begin.

3. Open the filling valves slowly

Turn one valve to the open position first, then slowly open the second valve. You should hear water flowing into the system.

Keep your eyes on the pressure gauge as you open the valve. The pressure should rise steadily; if it jumps rapidly, close the valve slightly to slow the flow.

4. Stop at the correct target pressure

Close the valves once the gauge reaches the recommended cold pressure, typically around 1.2 to 1.5 bar unless your manual says otherwise. Do not let it climb into the red zone.

On an external loop, turn both valve handles so they are perpendicular to the pipework to shut them off. On key or lever systems, return the lever to the closed position and remove the key if required.

5. Check for leaks and reset the boiler

Once the valves are closed, check the braided hose connections and any visible pipe joints around the boiler for drips. If you see any water escaping, turn the boiler off and contact an engineer.

Turn the boiler back on and reset any fault codes as per the manufacturer’s instructions. The boiler should now start and run normally if low pressure was the only issue.

How repressurising links to bleeding radiators

When you bleed radiators, you let out trapped air, which also releases a small amount of water and lowers the overall system pressure. This is why your gauge may drop after bleeding.

The best approach is to bleed your radiators first, starting with the ones upstairs and furthest from the boiler. Then check the pressure and top up carefully using the filling loop to bring it back to the target level.

Important safety warnings and pressure problems

Only ever top up a little at a time. Over‑pressurising can trigger safety devices in the boiler or cause your pressure relief valve to open, dumping water outside.

If the pressure climbs close to 3 bar while filling, stop immediately and close both valves. If it actually reaches 3 bar or you see water discharging from a copper pipe outside, turn the boiler off and contact a Gas Safe engineer.

Do not keep topping the system up if the pressure quickly drops again. Regularly adding fresh water can cause corrosion and sludge buildup, leading to more serious faults in future.

Pressure keeps dropping back down

If the pressure falls again within hours or days, this suggests a deeper issue that needs investigation. It could be a leak on the pipework, a radiator valve, or a component inside the boiler.

Another frequent cause is a faulty expansion vessel, which is the part that absorbs pressure changes as the water heats and cools. If this fails, the system cannot maintain stable pressure and will often trigger the relief valve.

In these cases, avoid repeatedly repressurising the boiler. Instead, note how far and how fast the pressure drops, then arrange a professional inspection.

Boiler shows a fault code after repressurising

Sometimes the boiler will still display a fault code or lockout message even after you have restored the correct pressure. Check the manual for the meaning of the specific code.

In some cases, you may need to press a reset button once the pressure is in range. If the fault returns or the boiler refuses to start, turn it off and call a Gas Safe engineer, as there may be an electrical, sensor, or internal water issue.
