How to Top Up Boiler Pressure: Keyless & Keyed Systems

If your boiler pressure has dropped, your heating may stop working or the display may show a fault code. Topping up boiler pressure is often a simple job, but the method depends on whether your combi boiler uses an external filling loop, integrated levers or a filling key.

Most systems can be refilled by a homeowner, provided you follow the instructions carefully. Take your time, avoid forcing controls and stop if anything looks unsafe or does not behave as expected.

Check the pressure before topping up

Look for the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. It may be a small round dial, a digital reading on the display or a pressure section within the control panel. When the system is cool, the reading should usually be around 1 to 1.5 bar, although your boiler manufacturer may specify a slightly different figure.

If the needle is below 1 bar, the boiler may need more water in the central heating system. Do not aim for the highest possible reading. Overfilling can cause the pressure to rise too far when the heating warms up.

  • Turn the heating and boiler controls off, then allow the system to cool.

  • Find the pressure gauge and identify the correct filling method.

  • Keep an eye on the gauge while adding water.

  • Stop at roughly 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cool.

Using an external filling loop

Many combi boilers have an external filling loop fitted beneath the boiler. This is usually a short, silver braided hose connecting two pipes, with one or two small valves at either end. Some filling loops have lever handles, while others use screwdriver slots or small tap-style controls.

Open the valves slowly, one at a time if there are two. You should hear water entering the system and see the pressure gauge rise. If both valves are opened too quickly, the pressure can increase before you have time to react. Close the valves as soon as the gauge reaches the recommended level, then check that no water is dripping.

Some filling loops are removable. If yours has a detachable hose, the valves may need to be closed before the loop is removed. Follow the boiler manual rather than pulling or twisting the connection.

Combi boilers with integrated levers

Newer combi boilers may have an integrated filling link, so there is no external braided hose. Look underneath the boiler for one or two small levers, often coloured black, blue or grey. The manual should show their position and explain which way to turn them.

Move the levers gradually and watch the pressure display. You may need to open both controls to allow water into the heating circuit, but do not swing them fully open straight away. Once the pressure reaches the correct level, return every lever to its original closed position.

Keyed filling systems

Some boilers use a keyed filling system, commonly found on certain models. The small filling key may be supplied with the boiler or clipped beneath it. It fits into a dedicated slot or valve, often underneath the appliance, and may need to be turned to unlock the filling position.

Insert the key as shown in the manual, then turn it carefully. Open the accompanying valve slowly and monitor the gauge until the pressure is around 1 to 1.5 bar. Close the valve, return the key to its original position and remove it only if the manufacturer’s instructions say to do so.

If you cannot find the filling loop, integrated levers or key, do not operate random valves beneath the boiler. Pipes may include isolation valves, drain points or gas controls, and using the wrong one can create a leak or affect the appliance.

Steps after topping up

Your boiler may need a reset before it starts heating again. Use the reset control described in the manufacturer’s instructions, then allow the boiler a few minutes to restart. Avoid repeatedly pressing reset if the fault returns, as this suggests the underlying problem has not been resolved.

Once the heating has run, check your radiators. Cold spots at the top can indicate trapped air, while a radiator that remains cold after the boiler is working may need further investigation. Bleeding radiators can reduce system pressure, so check the gauge again afterwards and top up only if needed.

Monitor the pressure over the next 24 to 48 hours. A small change as the system heats and cools can be normal, but a steady drop may point to a leak, a faulty pressure relief valve or another issue that needs professional attention.

Common mistakes and safety checks

Do not top up while the boiler and radiators are hot unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. Hot water can make the pressure reading misleading, and adding cold water to a hot system may place unnecessary stress on components.

  • Do not open both filling valves fully and walk away.

  • Do not leave a filling loop or integrated valves open after refilling.

  • Do not keep adding water if the pressure will not rise.

  • Do not work on the boiler if you smell gas or see water near electrical connections.

If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply if it is safe to do so, ventilate the area and contact the relevant emergency service. If water is near electrics, pressure will not stabilise or the boiler repeatedly loses pressure, stop using it and call a qualified heating engineer.
